Botulinum Toxin Q&A
Jeuveau®, Dysport®, and Botox® are offered at our practice to temporarily reduce moderate to severe frown lines. Results typically last 3-4 months.
What is Botox?
Botox is the most popular muscle movement inhibiting injectable drug on the market. The active component in Botox is called botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin that stops your nerves from signaling certain muscles to flex.
Botox is highly effective in treating fine facial lines, but it also treats a number of other conditions.
At Keehan Dermatology, Dr. Keehan uses Botox and two similar drugs with the same main ingredient: Dysport™ and Xeomin®. Their formulas are slightly different, but they both specialize in treating prominent frown lines between the eyebrows.
Dr. Keehan might start your treatment with one of the drugs and use another if the first becomes less effective for you over time.
The effects of Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin all last for around 4-6 months with each round of injections. If you’re satisfied with the results, you can add the injections to your regular treatment plan at Keehan Dermatology.
What can Botox treat?
Dr. Keehan uses Botox to treat fine lines and more at Keehan Dermatology. Botox specifically treats a type of fine line called a dynamic wrinkle, or a wrinkle that forms over time with repeated muscle movements. Among these wrinkles are:
- Frown lines
- Forehead lines
- Crow’s feet
- Lines of motion around mouth
- Chin dimpling
If you sweat excessively under your armpits, Botox can help. Botox is approved to treat a condition called hyperhidrosis that results in lots of uncontrollable underarm sweating.
If you have other conditions or physical features that Botox can treat, Dr. Keehan lets you know how it can help.
Am I a good candidate for Botox injections?
Before you get Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin, Dr. Keehan asks about your medical history and treatment expectations during a brief one-on-one consultation. He might decide that you’re a candidate for any of the three drugs if:
- You’re generally healthy with no neuromuscular diseases
- You aren’t pregnant or breastfeeding
- Your expectations are realistic
- You’re 18 or older
- You understand the treatment and the risks
While considering Botox injections for your treatment, Dr. Keehan takes careful consideration of your facial anatomy and movement. He places the injections strategically and in appropriate doses to make sure they don’t affect nearby muscles or result in a frozen appearance.
You’ll still be able to make your regular facial expressions, but you’ll see fewer wrinkles while making them and while your face is at rest.
